This needs further revision. After transcribing Jon's first draft, we need to add the Julie character as the primary off-Myrah antagonist. It will be Julie who has sent the gemstone to Will and who is trying to use the gemstone to pull Will into her world to absorb his magic. To that end, the gemstone almost HAS TO be carnelian, but I'm not opposed to Will/Julia finding a turquoise stone after Will gives up the first. — Davenport 2026/03/12 14:46
Early on, this stone appears to be the source of Will's power, but later we see that it is more of a conduit or tool to help him draw upon a deeper source of magic.
Jon describes this as “no bigger than his thumb; smooth and round in a way that there was a small scoop missing in the bottom center with specks of jet black speckled over the mostly turquoise surface,” but Marcus has always imagined this as an orange colored, translucent gem in a more traditional round brilliant cut.

The stone has a calming, grounding energy that makes it a great stone for when you are feeling overwhelmed, or to aid in meditation. It is said to connect heaven and earth and help you connect to the spiritual world. Turquoise can strengthen your connection to intuition…
https://trulyexperiences.com/blog/carnelian-gemstone/ Carnelian appears to be an orange stone with symbolism and magic uses dating at least as far back as the Egyptians. That site also says that carnelian begins with a female energy, but as it's exposed to heat, it turns more red as the iron oxidizes and takes on a more masculine energy. This might jive better with the flow of the story.
“Outside of Ancient Egypt, Carnelian is used by wizards. They would utilise the energy of this powerful stone to trigger other stones.”
Try not to overuse the Gemstone Motif
