I went and saw the new 007 movie (“Quantum of Solace”) last night. I like the new plot and character developments, but this modern camera style is totally distracting.<\/p>\n
The new Bond is a darker, more humanized style James Bond. The new Bond doesn’t come off as outrightly womanizing (like Sean or Pierce’s portrayal) as much as he’s just totally emotionally detached. Dare I say; he’s almost the definition of anti-hero with the perception “myself and country first, friends and fellow nationals second”. Personally, I think its awesome, but if you were a fan of the upright “shaken, not stirred” uber-professional, high class brit, then you probably won’t share my feelings. Similarly, M is no longer simply a psudo-mother to Bond who half-heartedly shakes her finger in disapproval. She’s become a business first, reigns tight, fearful yet whole hearted near-antagonist.<\/p>\n
As for the cinematography: I went to see ‘Quantum’ at a DLP projection cinema 40 miles away. The sound and picture quality were absolutely superb. I’m totally impressed that a huge screen can be projected without any pixelization. Each time we go to see a movie now, I’m the only person in the theater who cheers when the DLP slide is shown. My only beef with Quantum of Solace was the same beef I have with modern movie making. Why do they spend so much time creating elaborate car chase and heavy action scenes, only to make them totally incomprehensible by moving the camera so violently that we can’t tell what the frak is going on? If I wanted to watch amateur footage of Bond, I’d be watching YouTube<\/a>. There were two or three times in the movie where my friend and I looked at each other and said, “That was awesome, but wtf just happened?”<\/p>\n Really, Quantum of Solace had such a fabulous script, incredible acting, and genuinely good Bond story, its a total shame that the producer had to ruin it with the current trend in cinematic photography.
