So here’s a sentence I never thought I’d type: I just spent three days letting a FREE AI watch me crash a piece of proprietary industrial software, over and over, until it figured out how to make the thing run on Wine under Linux.<\/p>\n
For those who don’t know (or block it out; like my wife does): Wine is not an emulator, but it lets Windows programs run on Linux. No Windows license, no VM, just… 20% of the time, it works every time. When it doesn’t work, you spend your morning and midday coffee breaks talking to the ghost in the machine and waiting for it to talk back to you.<\/p>\n
The loop went something like this:<\/p>\n
I honestly did not expect this to work, but just like a human sitting in a dark room hyped up on Mountain Dew, it did… after bashing its head into the desk in frustration. Thankfully, the AI has no blood and you can’t hear it scream.<\/p>\n
The thing runs now. On Linux. For free. Free software to get data off a product some company charges big money for is now running on an OS that costs nothing, fixed by an AI that cost us nothing. And since I did this at work (for a municipal government) that’s taxpayer money I don’t have to spend. The penny pincher in me is thrilled.<\/p>\n
But here’s the part I actually like best: I’m having it write up the bug report to send upstream to Wine. They don’t accept AI code, so it will be up to a volunteer to recreate this issue and write the proper solution into the official code, but it’s possible everyone on the planet will soon get one less bug and one more reason to run Windows software on a free computer.<\/p>\n
Proprietary software, freed by free tools, fixed for free, for everyone. There’s something deeply right about that.<\/p>\n
