It goes without saying that we live in a consumerist society. By that I mean, we work so we can have money to buy things. There are things like “Consumer Reports” and “Consumer” sections of newspapers to support this ideology.
\nThe problem with the “Consumer” role is that Consumers must constantly spend money. Our society does a great job of socializing Consumers into recognizing sales and ways to save money, but most Consumers don’t think about how much work it takes to earn back the amount spent (leading to debt).
\nThis is turning us into a workaholic society. The Consumer must work more to pay back his debt.<\/p>\n
I would like to pose a different ideology to you.<\/p>\n
What if we lived in a society that was based around the worker? In such a society, we would buy things to provide jobs and to power the economy. Instead of simply spending money in a zombie-like state as “Consumers”, we would have been socialized with the skills to spend money in a way that keeps us from being overwhelmed with debt.
\nIn the Laborist Society, people would do their job because they love it, not because they’re forced to work at something<\/i>.<\/p>\n
If you are the Consumer, ‘money buys happiness’.
\nIf you’re the Worker, ‘happiness makes money’.<\/p>\n
I guess i just see the Laborist society making more people feel fulfilled in their lives. Work will always need to be done, so a worker can always find something they enjoy doing. Money comes and goes, so a consumer winds up as a manic-depressive.<\/p>\n
